Date Cinnamon Rolls

Cinnamon rolls are one of my favorite sweet things to eat. So I thought, why not bake them, but change them up so they’ll be at least a bit healthier. That’s why, instead of the buttery cinnamon filling, I decided to do a date filling!

Believe me when I tell you that these date cinnamon rolls are just as delicious as the original ones, but a lot healthier. You can barely taste the difference actually. The dates provide a sweet sticky paste, but because of the strong flavor of the cinnamon there is only a slight taste of the dates.

Both the dough and the filling is really easy to make. I have to admit that it is a bit time consuming, but you’ll be rewarded by a nice warm cinnamon roll! πŸ˜‰

  • 1 packet dried yeast
  • 1 cup soy milk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ΒΌ teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon coconut sugar

Date Filling:

  • 2 cups mashed dates
  • 4 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  1. Mix milk with coconut oil and heat up until coconut oil has melted.
  2. In a bowl mix together the flour, yeast, sugar and salt.
  3. Add in the milk mixutre, combine well and knead into a dough.
  4. Place the dough in a bowl, cover with a cloth and let rise for an hour in a warm place.
  5. In the meantime, make the filling: first melt the coconut oil. Mix it with mashed dates, maple syrup, and cinnamon.
  6. Preheat oven to 180Β°C/350Β°F and line a baking sheet (or two) with parchment paper.
  7. Divide dough in half. Roll out 1 piece of the dough on a floured surface to a 45x30cm (18×12 inches) rectangle. Spread half of the date filling evenly on top of the dough. Roll up tightly, starting with the long edge and pinch seam to seal. Repeat with the remaining dough and date filling.
  8. Cut the logs into slices and place on the baking sheets.
  9. Bake for about 25 – 30 min.
